Copying Movie DVDs with dd
Many people prefer copying a movie DVD to their media server hard drive rather than risk scratching the original DVD.
Copying a DVD to an ISO image on a hard drive might be challenging. Once upon a time the dd
command worked without complaint. These days various encryption methods cause the command to fail. There is a simple solution.
Use any app that uses libdvdcss2
to view the DVD, such as XBMC/Kodi, SMPlayer, or VLC. Only a few seconds of viewing is necessary. Close the app and then the dd
command works just fine.
