Network Controller WoL Failure
After updating the office desktop to Slackware 15.0, the system would not awaken from a wake-on-lan (WoL) magic packet. In Slackware 14.2 and previous releases this has been functioning for many years. Finding the root cause was a short journey because of initial trials and errors testing Slackware 15.0.
Removing the r8168
module package and removing the r8169
module blacklisting resolved the problem. The caveat is a return of the original paper cut of the ethtool
failing in runlevel 1.
Newer is not always better.
Problem solved but Yet Another Example why updating computers is so frustrating.
Something always breaks. Always.
