Dueling Banjos
I notice many people asking questions about the dual purpose of the Firefox URL location box. For example, users want to know why when typing a URL the box instead offers search suggestions. Or how to disable search suggestions.
I long have disliked software widgets that try to be multi purpose. More often than not there are problems and weird corner case issues. The URL location box is no different.
This is easily resolved by using a separate search box and disabling all related suggestion options, which I have done for many years.
I don’t like search suggestions at all. This is a huge privacy issue.
I don’t like software tools designed to try to outguess me. Considering how awful search engines have become I question the usefulness of search suggestions.
